BUYING GUIDE

When buying your next mattress consider the following

SPRINGS ARE FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND THE FILLINGS ARE FOR YOUR COMFORT LEVEL

SPRINGS

Here at the Sleep Zone 90% of our sales are pocket sprung. These mattresses contain springs which are within an individual fabric pockets, allowing them to work independently of each other. This arrangement tailors support from the centre of the mattress to the very edge, and means that there is significantly less roll-together when two people are on it. Because the springs move independently the springs support posture at the main pressure points, allowing to maintain correct neck and spine alignment

The number of individual springs vary. As a rough guide, a mattress with a greater number of pocket springs will be more supportive and consequently more expensive, and hence the saying ‘you get what you pay for’. A pocket sprung mattresses can be a great investment as they provide exceptional support.

The more springs – the more support

These mattresses are built with a system whereby all the springs are connected together and arranged in rows. they are connected from the top and bottom of the mattress by a helical wire.

An outer rod is often added around the perimeter of the spring unit to strengthen the sides of the mattress. Open coil mattresses will often give you a more ‘bouncy’ feel and are often cheaper in price.

Open coil is generally cheaper than pocket sprung – the more springs the more support

FILLINGS

Generally you will find 5 types of filling on the market

Man made polyesters are generally used by lower end price point products and volume manufactures.

These will offer adequate comfort level and support but after a longer period of use will tend to flatten and give a flatter look to your mattress

Give you a more soft and sumptuous feel. they offer breathability, allowing moisture to be wicked away better, fillings such as Cotton, Silk, Cashmere, are great at giving you a great comfort level and to help keep you cooler, whereby Wool is the best ambient material keeping you warm in a cold environment and helps regulated temperature in a warmer environment. Flax & Hemp are a great antibacterial barrier and the most absorbent components we can use within the manufacturer of your new mattress.

This helps keep your mattress fresh and bacteria free giving you a healthier nights sleep

Memory foam was traditionally developed by NASA for use in their space programs. Memory foam is a pressure relief product which is great for anyone who has joint pain or sciatica.  Memory foam requires body heat to perform, however it is known as closed cell structure and as such has a tendency to retain body heat

Pros  – Good for keeping spine alignment and posture support

Cons –  Retains body heat so not always suitable for a warm sleeper

Often used in the medical industry and offers unparalleled support for those who maybe suffering from joint pain & back ache. It is also used by top professional athletes for body recovery following intense physical training programmes. It has wide support from all health professionals, the Chiropractor Association, Physiotherapy Associations and leading sleep scientists. Medical grade foam is an open cell structure and allows breathability and is recognised to be 70% cooler than memory foam.

It works from natural body weight allowing the sleeper to turn earlier and prevents that sinking feeling you sometimes get with memory foam.

We have two types of Latex on the market

Dunlop process – which is a manufactured latex

Talalay latex – which is a natural latex whose origins are from the sap of the rubber tree

Natural Latex is hypoallergenic and good for posture support  and has good durability.  Dunlop process is more commonly used for volume manufacturers to achieve price points

Our MATTRESSES come in different tensions, softer, medium and firmer

Top tips from the manager!

When trying your new mattress we recommend you lie on the bed mattress for a minimum of 5 minutes in your preferred sleeping position, you would use at home. i.e.; try using the amount of pillows you would use at home e.g. 1,2 or non When trying out your new mattress try and remove as much excess clothing as you can i.e. remove your coat !! Mattresses need to be laid on to determine the correct feel and support

A mattress can not be tested correctly by pressing your hand onto it nor sitting on the side of it as this will not give you the correct representation of your sleep position nor will it tell you what support and comfort level the mattress has to offer. so take the time to lay on it.
